Empowerment

...is the theme for iHanna's Autumn Postcard Swap.  When I saw the theme, coupled with being organized by the wonderfully talented and generous Hanna, I joined up.  I have not participated in a swap in sooooo long!!

We are swapping 5 postcards, each one handmade.  Decisions, decisions - do i make the same card 5 times, or make 5 original cards?  Hmmmm. What to do.....

After creating a collage background and laying down a layer of paint, I began drawing faces.  Five slightly different faces emerged. The decision made itself apparent.  I am having tremendous fun with drawing and painting these faces.  So i played around with the cards and here is what I came up with.  I hope the recipients enjoy them as much as I had the fun of creating them.

Sorry about the fuzziness of the last photo, trying to get the picture before the last bit of daylight.  I experimented a lot with the last one....I hope the recipient is okay with the results!!

All cards are original drawings colored with Neo II water soluble crayons, Sharpie marker, and India Ink.

Empowerment is a fabulous theme and came along for me at a time when I have found it necessary to become more grounded spiritually, and to love myself more intentionally.

Thank you, hang, for the opportunity to participate, create, share, and grow with like minded women.  I'm very excited to receive my cards!!

Small Business Saturday

...was yesterday.  According to what I've heard on TV (they always tell the truth there, hehehehehe) this is the 3rd year for the event.  I participated last year, accidentally. I participated yesterday, intentionally.

I took myself to my favorite independent bookstores - a little drive but well worth it.  One of the few remaining independent bookstores as well as on of the few remaining brick-and -mortar bookstores....so many changes over time.  A place like Vroman's gives me comfort.

The stairs are cool.

I spent a lot of time with the art books, savoring the selection

and the variety

and {secretly} longing for all of these volumes!!

I love the fact that Vroman's has a fabulous and varied selection of books.  Although I love shopping online, and buying discount, there is no experience like shopping and seeing the pages.  ESPECIALLY when looking at art books.

And then, there is that new book smell.....love that too.

Oh, I did make a few purchases, mostly gifts :)

Can you feel it?

I can. After months of dwelling in a difficult place, emotionally speaking, the light is beginning to shine. YES!!

So here are some fairly recent journal pages, part of a book dedicated to quotes that inspire and remind me about the journey.  Thanks to all the teachers in my life for helping me to this current place.

Journal Note: I am using one of the Strathmore Mixed Media journals.  I love everything about this EXCEPT the coil binding.

My teachers are everywhere.

Many of them have been around me for a long time.

Waiting.

For me to hear them.

I love this page.  Did a little damage from excessive heat gun action. DOH.

Inspiration from Donna Downey's Inspiration Wednesday videos.

This stamped image has been laying around here for a long time....

waiting for me.

Thank you for visiting with me.  Have a wonderful {every} day.

One Truth

Here's a mixed media collage I did today.  I will be abandoning this soon as part of Michael deMeng's Art Abandonment movement.  Yes it is a movement!!  If you haven't seen the art, joy, love, camaraderie, and positive energy being shared by this group, it is well worth a look.

The size is about 6" x 9".  The blue paper in the background came from one of the bulletin boards in my classroom last year.  I am looking for a new school so have decided to incorporate this paper into my art....

Moving forward with the knowledge that there is one truth.  Thank goodness!!

Magnificent Monday

In my humble opinion, Monday gets a bad rap.  There's a myriad of reasons for this.  So I'm attempting a series of posts in order to provide a different and positive perspective on a Monday.  Not sure what direction this will take each week, so we'll explore together.  The real goal for me is that you will feel better after reading this.....

So this week I have some links for you.

The Art Newspaper: Cool article here about an upcoming interactive art show in Philadelphia.  Goes along with other current exhibits as well as the recent opening of the Barnes collection.  By the way, have you watched The Art of the Steal?? Excellent documentary about the controversial move of the Barnes Foundation.

The Jessie Rees Foundation: Anytime I need a lift, need to quit feeling sorry for myself, need to do something for someone else, I look here.  This group is devoted to helping children that have cancer and they have lots of great stories along with a variety of ways to help.  The foundation gives these young fighters a universal message that's good for all of us:  NEVER EVER GIVE UP.

Here's a video with a nice mixed media painting, from start to finish:
Hope all of this makes your Monday Magnificent!!

Collections

I'm reorganizing and de-stashing the Salon.  Need more space there because I want a floor easel, as I have some larger sized canvases which I'm eager to cover.

It's hard to let go of some of stuff though.  I know i'm not the only one who feels this way.  So today I picked up my camera and started photographing some of my collections.  I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

We'll begin with these rose petals.  We have 24 bushes.  I can't bear to say good bye to any of these beauties.

So they stay with me, in various displays throughout the house.  Seeing them makes me smile, especially in winter.  You've all heard about our terrible winters here in southern Cali, right?

I was in the kitchen and saw my mugs.  Lots and lots and lots of mugs.  Special memories.

Happy.  Sad.  Bittersweet.  Funny!!  Friends.  Family.  The collection spans more than 40 years.

Everytime I pour my coffee or brew my tea in one of these, it always tastes better.

Then there are the books.....

Lots and lots of them.  There are still boxes in the garage.  And, over the years, the collection is regularly re-evaluated, thinned, and donated.

There are too many things to see and learn.

Too much beauty and wisdom.

I have a curious mind.  Always have.

My houseplants are dear to me.

Growing.

Thriving.

Bringing a sense of nature

and beauty

and sweet simplicity

to our home.

Inspired by a blessing

I don't know if I've talked about starting yoga here. I have recently begun taking yoga classes at a nearby studio.  I love it!! I've wanted to do this for quite awhile but was WAITING for...more discretionary money to spend...losing 5 more pounds....having more time (??? directly DEFIES scientific law)....being ready to 'commit'......  Then I thought about my thinking and realized I should just LET GO and do it.  The studio offers a variety of practices, which I like.

Last Saturday I participated in a Kundalini class, which was very rigorous for me but I absolutely loved.  It was sacred. It was transforming. It helped me breathe. It helped me empty my mind, if only for moments at a time, and leave my body.  The blessing we sang at the end of the practice is this one ~

When preparing to work on a journal page yesterday I found this tag in my {extensive} stash. Karma. Fate. Inspiration.  I recently purchased some http://www.dickblick.com/products/golden-absorbent-ground/ -OOPS- after seeing Donna Downey's Inspiration Wednesday video. She raves about using this medium to prep for both Pan Pastels and/or watercolor & gouache.  So I used it on this spread with a couple of stencils.  Sloppy but I'm ok with the results.  Need.More.Practice.

Just like yoga.......

Have fun with your life and DON'T WAIT!!
